For families, classrooms and anyone who loves puns

Funny Riddles

Every riddle on this page has a joke inside it. A container you can never open or a vehicle with no wheels sounds like a contradiction until you hear the answer said aloud. The setup sounds impossible, then the answer turns out to be a pun or a bit of literal thinking, and the laugh comes from how obvious it was all along.

There is a difference between a funny riddle and a joke with a question mark on it. A joke can have any punchline the teller likes. A riddle has to be solvable: the clues should lead to one answer, and someone who thinks hard enough can get there before you reveal it. We kept the ones where a guesser has a real chance, and the humor is clean enough for a classroom.

How to get the most laughs out of them

Delivery matters. Read the first sentence as if it were a serious puzzle, pause, then add the clue that gives the game away. With kids, let them shout guesses freely; the wrong guesses are often funnier than the answer. With adults, take guesses in turn around the table so the quiet ones get a go.

They also work as filler: one at the start of a class, one on a long drive when the car goes quiet, one written inside a birthday card.

Tips for telling funny riddles

  • Hold off on the reveal long enough for a few wrong guesses, since the bad guesses are part of the laugh.
  • If a pun falls flat, explain both meanings in one sentence and move on rather than defending it.
  • Ask kids to write a new one using the same pattern, such as "I'm a ___ that has never ___", and read the best ones aloud.
  • Pair a funny riddle with a hard one in a round so the table gets a breather between real head-scratchers.

Every riddle here went to a second solver without its answer. When they reached a different answer that also fit, the riddle was rewritten and tested again, or cut. Our editorial standards.
