Hard Riddles
The riddles on this page are hard in a specific way. Most stack three or four clues, and each clue points to a different meaning of the same word, so one clue might sound like money, the next like the outdoors and the last like something in a kitchen. You can usually get one clue easily. The challenge is finding the single word that satisfies them all.
Hard is not the same as obscure. We left out riddles that need specialist knowledge or that only work with one very particular answer the writer had in mind. Every riddle here was solved blind by a second solver, so the answer you reveal should account for every line, with no clue left dangling. When you see it, it should feel obvious in hindsight.

How to run a hard-riddle round
Hard riddles need more time and fewer of them. Five is a good round. Read the riddle twice, then put it in writing where everyone can see it, on a screen or on a printed card in the middle of the table, because players will want to go back to the exact wording of each clue.
Teams of two or three work better than solo play here. One person spots the meaning of the first clue, another tests it against the rest. Give three minutes per riddle and award a bonus point if the team can explain how their answer fits each clue.
Tips for stumped solvers
- Take each clue on its own and list every meaning of its key word, then look for the word that turns up on every list.
- Say the riddle out loud: some clues rely on two words that sound alike but are spelled differently, and that is easy to miss on the page.
- If one clue mentions history or an old trade, it is usually there to confirm the answer, so solve the modern clues first.
- When a team is close, tell them how many clues their guess already fits; it narrows the search without giving the answer away.
