Riddles
This is our general riddle set: no theme, just everyday things (parts of the body, things around the house, things in the backyard) described in a way that sends you looking in the wrong place first. The easy ones fall in a few seconds. The hard ones stack two or three clues, like a word that turns into another word when you drop a letter, and only one answer fits all of them.
A good riddle plays fair. Every line has to be true of the answer, and once someone says it out loud, the room should groan rather than argue. Each riddle in this set was solved blind by a second solver before it went up. If you want a particular flavor, every other riddle page on the site is linked from here, sorted by audience and by topic.

How to run a riddle round with a mixed group
Pick one reader and hand them the phone or a printed answer sheet. Read each riddle twice, slowly, then give the table a set amount of time, say sixty seconds, before anyone may guess. The second reading matters more than you'd think, because the clue that cracks a riddle is often the one people only half heard the first time.
With mixed ages, start with the easy filter on so the youngest players score early, then switch to medium and hard as the group warms up. Keep score with tally marks if you like, but a round where everyone shares the groan at the end is just as good.
Tips for keeping the riddles moving
- If nobody has it after a minute, reread only the last line, since on many of these riddles the last line holds the plainest clue.
- Let a player who already knows a riddle act as the next reader instead of calling out the answer.
- Accept a close answer only if every line of the riddle still fits it, and say which line rules out the near misses.
- For car trips, print the card pack: eight cards to a page, with the answers on a separate sheet for the front-seat passenger.
Print these as cards
All 40 on 5 pages of cut-out cards, eight to a page, with the answers on a separate sheet so nobody peeks. Prints on US Letter or A4.
