Riddles for Kids
These riddles are written for children aged about six to ten, and for the adult reading them out. The answers are things a child in that age range already knows: pets, bedroom furniture, playground toys, vegetables on the plate, creatures from the pond. The clues use short words and concrete details, like how something feels, sounds or moves, so a child can picture the answer rather than having to know a fact.
A good kids' riddle gives two or three clues that each narrow things down, so a child who misses the first one can still catch the second. We avoided puns that depend on adult vocabulary, and anything scary or unkind. We also kept the facts in the clues accurate, so a riddle about a frog won't teach your child something wrong about frogs.

How to use riddles with kids
At home, riddles fill the gaps: waiting for dinner, bath time, the last ten minutes of a car ride. Read one slowly, then let the child guess as many times as they like. If they're stuck, reread the most concrete clue and ask a question like "what pet runs on a wheel?" rather than giving the answer.
In a classroom, read one as a morning warm-up and let children whisper their guess to a partner before anyone calls out. That way the fast solvers don't take the answer away from everyone else.
Tips for the adult doing the reading
- Read the riddle twice for younger children, who can miss the first clue while they're still settling in to listen.
- Give a choice of three answers if a six-year-old is stuck, with one of them clearly silly.
- Afterward, ask the child to make up a riddle about their own favorite toy, using the same "I am..." pattern.
- Print the card pack for road trips; the answers come on a separate sheet, so a child can be the quizmaster.
Print these as cards
